Laser frenectomy

Laser frenectomy

Frenectomy means surgery that tends to remove or reposition the frenulum, a small mucosa basically made up of fibrous connective tissue covered by epithelium, very similar to the gingival one, which joins the lips to the gingival alveolar mucosa and the tongue, enriched in this case of elastic fibers, to the floor of the mouth. The frenula are considered anatomically pathological when due to dimensional anomalies they cause an altered functionality of the lips and tongue and / or also causing an abnormal development of the entire stomatognathic system, more frequently dental malposition, diastema, incompetence, dental rotations. Extremely short or absent lingual frenum can lead to ankylosis of the tongue which, in some cases, can prevent normal suckling of milk in the newborn. The treatment is exclusively surgical and can be carried out with a traditional technique, which involves the use of a scalpel and sutures, which can be performed mostly under local anesthesia and which, unfortunately, sometimes requires sedation, given the young age of the patients. to which it is addressed. Fortunately, laser surgery is increasingly gaining ground which, in this case, proves to be particularly effective as it can be carried out with a simple application of anesthetic ointment, being totally free of bleeding, extremely rapid, free from contraindications and post-operative symptoms and not requiring of suture. All this makes it feasible on an outpatient basis even on the newborn.
