Currently there are various whitening techniques available, from home-based do-it-yourself to professional ones performed in dental offices. Among the most used ones there is the dental whitening using LED or plasma lamps , but it is not the safest and most effective technique. A few years ago the use of lasers in whitening technique, capable of giving considerably better results than classic lamps, was also introduced in the dental field. Three types of lasers are generally used in cosmetic dentistry: diode, argon and CO2 lasers. Among these, the diode laser is the one that offers a better whitening effect, because its energy favors the penetration of the product into the dental tissue with greater intensity. Laser teeth whitening is a safe, painless technique and has no contraindications. For this reason it is also recommended for those suffering from dental sensitivity. It has longer lasting effects than traditional lamps and is confirmed to be the fastest, most innovative and effective way to get whiter teeth. In addition to whitening, the laser is capable of removing discoloration and deeper pigmentation of the teeth. The first visit is essential to assess the feasibility of the treatment. After a careful examination of the mouth, checking the hygiene, the presence of any caries, devitalization and / or pathologies that would preclude its operation, it is possible to identify, with the aid of a color scale, the shade of white of the patient’s teeth and the one to be achieved. Later, masks are prepared to be used for post-treatment home maintenance. Before the whitening phase, a dental hygiene session is required, then a protective compound is applied to the gums, while a special whitening gel is applied to the teeth. Using the laser, the action of the gel is activated and intensified, which penetrates deeply into the enamel. The product is left to act for 15/30 minutes depending on the shade. During the treatment, both doctor and patient wear special glasses to protect their eyesight. Laser dental whitening is carried out in a single session; once carried out, it is advisable to refrain from using coffee, tea, tobacco, particularly coloured foods and drinks that could stain the enamel.
